Submit a proposal for a temporary exhibition at the AfricaMuseum

The AfricaMuseum tries to offer a dynamic and balanced program of temporary exhibitions. You can submit your proposal using this form. Twice a year, a strategic programming committee for temporary exhibitions reviews the proposals submitted. In future, we will be moving towards calls for proposals.

At present, our capacity to program new proposals is limited.

Briefly present the subject, approach and main objective of the exhibition.

Expand on the exhibition's theme, its main focuses, key messages and curatorial approach. How is the narrative structured and conveyed to the public?
(Additional documents can be attached at the end of the form)

Describe any ideas you may have in terms of scenography, look and feel of the exhibition, installations, media (objects, images, sounds, multimedia, etc.).
(Reference visuals or mood board can be attached at the end of the form)

Temporary exhibitions are one of the AfricaMuseum's core activities. The objectives of temporary exhibitions are:
-    to broaden the museum's audience and increase visitor numbers;
-    to communicate about the AfricaMuseum's collections and scientific research;
-    provide space for exchanges and show a contemporary and innovative Africa;
-    reflect the challenges and dynamics of Africa past and present;
-    play our role in society with regard to diversity and education, including a better understanding of our colonial past and heritage;
-    complement the permanent exhibition to address current events and/or gaps in the permanent exhibition;
-    position the museum in the broader cultural context of Brussels, Belgium, neighbouring countries, Africa, and the rest of the world.

Four criteria influence the decision:
-    potential to increase visitor numbers and/or attract new audiences;
-    societal relevance (human rights, diversity, social equality, ecological transition, biodiversity, etc.) with the aim of having a real impact on the public and in line with the AfricaMuseum's strategy;
-    feasibility in terms of human resources and material and financial means;
-    the generation of additional revenues.

How does the project fit in with the AfricaMuseum's mission ?
How does the exhibition relate to the AfricaMuseum's collection and/or scientific research?

Who is the target audience?
Describe the societal relevance. How could the project contribute to producing a real and relevant impact on audiences, in line with the museum's strategy?

The museum has defined the following guidelines and objectives for the development of its exhibitions:
-    integrity and scientific quality;
-    drawing on expertise within African and Afro-descendant communities;
-    a participatory and polyphonic process;
-    gender balance.

If your project already includes concrete ideas or proposals that correspond to these objectives, you can indicate them in the fields below (optional).

Describe the proposed project team (internal and external): curators, artists, researchers, main partners, etc.
What African and/or Afro-descendant expertise is included or envisaged in the project (e.g. research, creation, mediation, etc.)?
Does the project involve multiple voices, disciplines or perspectives? Are you considering a participatory creative process? If so, how?
How is this consideration taken into account in the project and its collaborations?
If the financial framework for your project is already known, you can provide information about it below (optional).
What would be the estimated overall budget (range)?
Are there any sources of funding that have been considered/explored/confirmed?
If you wish, you may attach documents such as a detailed concept note, visuals/mood board, CVs/bios of project leaders, etc.
